Defying the Stigma of Ageing Through Lifestyle choices
Do you think that getting older means slowing down, losing energy, and accepting defeat before you’ve even tried? Well, you are not alone. But you could not be more wrong!
Sure, when you’re 80 you won’t be performing like you did at 20. But that doesn’t mean you can’t feel energetic, capable, and downright awesome well into your golden years. In fact, looking after your health as the years pass is your best chance to boost your healthspan—the number of years you live in good health.
Did you know that in the UK, the average man spends around 16 years in poor health, and for women it’s 19 years? Given the average life expectancy, that means many of us start facing chronic conditions long before retirement age! This stark reality tells us one thing: the power is in your hands.
By making small, consistent changes, you can dramatically improve your quality of life and extend those healthy years. Here are the key factors to focus on:
1. What You Eat: Embrace Whole Foods
Think about the food your ancestors would have recognized as edible. More whole foods mean more nutrients, less processed junk, and a body that’s better equipped to fight off illness. And don’t forget to hydrate—water is your best friend! 💦For more on this, check out my blog Healthy Eating: Punishment or Opportunity?
2. How Much You Move: 30 Minutes Can Make a Big Difference
Whether it’s a brisk walk, a little cardio, or resistance training to keep your muscles and bones strong, movement is essential. It’s not about spending hours at the gym or hitting the pavement; even 30 minutes a day can be transformational. Remember: exercise isn’t just about weight loss—it’s about thriving at any age!
3. Managing Stress: Finding Your Calm
Stress can wreak havoc on your health, increasing your risk for a host of chronic conditions. Find ways to unwind—maybe not with a glass of plonk every night (although I’m not judging if that’s your thing 🤣). Instead, try a good book, meditation, fresh air, journaling, or even just smiling more throughout the day. Discover Why in my related blog post 6 reasons why you should smile more.
4. Prioritise Sleep: The Ultimate Recharge
Sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Prioritising quality sleep can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even dementia. Let’s be honest—who has energy without a good night’s sleep?I share some simple sleep hacks in another one of my blogs—worth a read (You Snooze, You Win!)!
5. Connections and Sense of Purpose: Thrive Through Relationships
Our well-being thrives on socialising and meaningful relationships. Whether it’s family, friends, or community connections, nurturing these bonds gives your life purpose and joy, which in turn supports your overall health.
The Journey to a Better You
Too often, we’re defeated before we even start—trapped by the stigma that ageing means inevitable decline, aches, weight gain, and fatigue. But let me tell yout: YOU have the power to shape your later years and how you feel by making choices that boost your health and vitality now. It’s a journey of discovering just how amazing you can feel when you give your body the right fuel, movement, rest, and connection.
Even a tiny step toward a healthier lifestyle is a step toward a more vibrant life today and tomorrow. Ageing is inevitable, but feeling old is optional.
Do you want to feel empowered, stay active, and keep living life on your terms as you age? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
In the meantime, here’s to increasing your healthspan and making the most of every year!
